Every year, ABC recognizes member companies that demonstrated outstanding safety performance the previous year. Entries are evaluated based on the type of member company - general contractor, subcontractor or supplier - and the total number of manhours worked.

ABC National honored the country's best construction firms at the 20th annual Excellence in Construction and National Safety Excellence awards ceremony earlier this month in Washington, D.C. Hardin Construction Company, LLC of Atlanta, GA, received a Pyramid Award for the Atlanta Botanical Garden Visitor Center & Parking Facility. Safety awards were also handed out that night. Winners were selected from members achieving Platinum status in ABC's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program, based on criteria including: self-evaluations, lost workday case rates, total recordable rates and interviews conducted by ABC. Both The Saxon Group, Inc., and W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company won National Safey Excellence Awards in the General Contractor category. Excel Electrical Technologies, Inc. and Hensel Phelps Construction Company each won a National Safety Merit Award. Congratulations!
The Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) was developed and written by contractors for contractors. The STEP program provides members with an organized approach to analyzing and further developing their safety and loss prevention program. It gives companies a valid, objective method with which to measure safety program improvements, and provides them with safety performance recognition that can be used as an important business development tool with clients. Awards are based on approximately 20 key elements of contractor safety programs such as commitment of company management, responsibilities of safety personnel, and budget. 2010 Safety Forum Chairman John Ambrosia (right) and 2010 ABC of Georgia Chairman Kevin Grass (left) present Hathaway Construction Services with their Platinum STEP Award and their Georgia Safety Award.
In addition to the STEP Award, the Georgia Chapter of ABC presents its Georgia Chapter Safety Awards of Excellence each year. This award is presented to companies who have achieved total recordable and lost time rates lower than the national average.
